Sex-link: A chicken produced by a hen and rooster of
two different breeds. The offspring of these two breeds
can be sexed based on their color or patterns
immediately after hatching. Females are one
color/pattern and males another.
Shank: The area between the claw and the first joint on
a chicken’s leg.
Sickles: Long, curved tail feathers on certain breeds of
roosters.
Standard: A description of the ideal traits of a breed.
Straight Run: Chicks that have not been sexed. When
you purchase straight run chicks, you will most likely
get both male and female chicks. Also called unsexed or
“as hatched.”
Variety: A breed subdivision according to color, comb
style, etc.
