On June 13th, 2014 Theresa Carriere completed her annual 100-km run from Sarnia to London. It’s the third time the breast cancer survivor has made the journey as part of her OneRun campaign. Proceeds support efforts including the London Regional Cancer Program, the Patient Assistance Program and the Breast Care Clinical Research and Tumour Biobank. Carriere is viewed as a huge inspiration in London and the surrounding area for her charitable work and her spirit. One onlooker was quoted saying, “She’s an earth angel, an inspiration for anyone who’s lost hope, for anyone battling cancer, an inspiration to us all,” (Sher, 2014). In 2010, Carriere first ran, raising $180,000. The next year, she raised $200,000. This year she hopes to raise $150,000. This year, 100 runners joined her along the way, and Carriere hopes to hold more runs in more locations in the future.

On June 4th, 2014, Justin Bourque, a 24-year-old from Moncton, shot five officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), killing three and severely injuring two. A manhunt for Bourque was launched and continued overnight and into June 5. On June 6, Bourque was found and taken into custody, ending a manhunt that lasted over 28 hours. Now that the officers have been laid to rest, an intense investigation is being done on Bourque, with the hopes of finding a motive for the incident. Friends and former colleagues of Bourque describe him as a “strange, intense man with a gun obsession” (QMI Agency, 2014). His Facebook page is full of photos and posts that are anti-gun control and anti-police. He has also previously stated that he wanted to go out “with a bang” (QMI Agency, 2014). As the investigation continues, more will emerge about the suspected cop-killer and his motives for the horrendous crime.

A killing spree was perpetrated on May 23, 2014, in Isla Vista, California, near the campus of University of California, Santa Barbara by 22-year-old Elliot Rodger. Seven people were killed, including the killer, and thirteen people sustained non-fatal wounds and injuries. Rodger exchanged gunfire with police twice during the killing spree and the rampage ended when his car crashed into a parked vehicle and came to a stop. Police found him dead in the car, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Before driving to the sorority house, Rodger uploaded to YouTube a video, titled Elliot Rodger's Retribution, in which he outlined details of his upcoming attack and the motivations behind his killing spree, which Rodger described as a desire to punish women for rejecting him and also a desire to punish sexually active men for living a better life than him. After he uploaded the video, Rodger e-mailed a lengthy autobiographical manuscript to acquaintances and family members. In it, he describes his childhood, family conflicts, and frustration over not being able to find a girlfriend, his hatred of women, racial minorities, and interracial couples, and his plans for committing the killing spree.
