How can someone start cosplaying?
"Cosplay can easily seem like a very intimidating hobby to pursue, however, your skill level improves over time. When I started cosplaying, I only knew very basic sewing by hand. Most cosplayers start this way, or by purchasing a pre-made costume. It was through practice, trial and error that I’ve learned to sew a variety of garments, as well as fabricate props and armor from materials such as craft foam, PVC, wood and cardboard. Now, having learned a myriad of skills during my time cosplaying, I look back and laugh at the fact that I used to pay people to alter a dress or fix something that broke. Cosplay is one of the most self-sufficient hobbies anyone can participate in.
The most important thing about getting into cosplay is going to the events. Most people don’t cosplay for their first time at an event, but the lively and friendly atmosphere implores them to the next time.

Concluding thoughts
I discovered the cosplay community in Jamaica by chance, and decided to cosplay on a whim, but day-by-day I’m grateful to be able to identify with such an accepting group of amazingly imaginative people. I think anyone who has cosplayed- whether in a costume bought online, or in one with a six-month investment of agonizingly tedious crafting- can share these sentiments.
