Vilma lauds indie films , airs optimism on movie industry
Batangas Rep . Vilma Santos- Recto yesterday expressed optimism that the country will produce more superior quality movies this year .
The veteran , award winning actress took note of moviegoers ’ all-out support to the Philippine movie industry during the recent Metro Manila Film Festival ( MMFF ) which was dominated by independent film makers and producers .
‘ IT ’ S ABOUT TIME ’
“ Tama lang mabigyan pagkakataon ang indie quality films . It ’ s about time . But let ’ s face it , Christmas is for family and children . Ang industriya ng pelikula ay bukas para sa lahat , mainstream man o indie movies ,” she said .
“ Sana mas marami pang box office at quality films ang magawa this year at mabuhay ang industriya ng pelikula … kung saan ako nanggaling at may utang na loob ,” she said .
Among the top independent films are Sunday Beauty Queen , which was named Best Picture ; Seklusyon which was awarded with Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography and Die Beautiful , which was chosen as the 42nd MMFF My Most Favorite Film award .
‘ ORO ’ AND POLITICS
Meanwhile , Camarines Sur Rep . Luis Raymund Villafuerte sought a Congressional probe on the supposed fallacious portrayal of small-scale mining and pro-environment activities in Camarines Sur in 2014 as depicted in one of the MMFF films , “ Oro .”
He demanded the MMDA Film Festival Executive Committee to explain to Congress why it included “ Oro ” as among the official entries and , worse , even granted an award to it despite its gory dog-slaying scene and its distorted depiction of supposedly everyday life in his province .
“ The film is nothing but political propaganda masquerading as art in which the highly respected actors that took part in it plus the film crew were unwittingly used to present an alternate universe of events that have never happened in Caramoan Island in CamSur two years ago ,” Villafuerte said .
“ There is such a thing as artistic license but it does not justify the misinterpretation of events for political ends ,” Villafuerte said .
MMFF BENEFICIARIES
Meantime , Quezon City Rep . Winston Castelo , chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Metro Manila Development , said organizers of the MMFF should guarantee that the intended beneficiaries will get their share of the film festival ’ s success , saying that this is the second objective of the project .
“ And I mean there should be no delay in the delivery of the said benefits ,’ said Castelo .
Under its mandate , the MMFF is tasked to allocate portions of the MMFF income to help movie industry workers and ensure the production of quality films under Mowelfund , Anti-Film Piracy , Film Academy of the Philippines and the Film Development Board .
Castelo recalled that during the committee inquiry into the MMFF , it was discovered that the organizers have failed to distribute the share of the said organizations , causing rift and demoralization among film industry players . ●
