Veteran entertainment scribe
Mario Hernando, a founding board
member of the Movie Television
Review and Classification Board
(MTRCB) and also a founding
member of the Manunuri ng
Pelikulang Pilipino, died on
Tuesday. He was 68.
A columnist for several
dailies, Hernando is best known
however, for his stint as resident
film reviewer of the GMA showbiz
talk show “Movie Patrol,” later
renamed “Movie Magazine.”

Mario Hernando writes 30

by his brother in their home in
Quezon City yesterday morning
and was rushed to the Capitol
Medical Center where he was
pronounced dead. According to
reports, Hernando was battling
liver cancer
He was the first managing
editor of Ang Pahayagang Malaya
in 1983. He later became editor of
Malaya’s Weekend magazine.
He was known for his booming
voice and genteel nature. Their
views on several topics might
have differed but he was never
quarrelsome or unkind.
Hernando was always mild-
mannered and was part of the old
vanguard in local film criticism.
In his lifetime, he taught film,
wrote critiques, penned books
– one of which is a tome on the
late National Artist for Film Lino
Brocka and MTRCB member.
In the late ‘80s, television
audiences would remember him
as the resident film reviewer of
the pioneering magazine talk
show “Movie Magazine” produced
by the late Inday Badiday’s LOCA
and LOBO Productions. ●
