Director to hold a Regional Meeting within a two-year period shall be grounds for removal as provided for in point 3 above .
Region 2 : Central Pacific - Vivian Sellers The IPA was well represented at the Sierra Nevada Judging Center ’ s Speaker ’ s Day held on Saturday , August 6th featuring speakers Marc Hatchadourian , curator of the New York Botanical Gardens , who spoke on “ Fifty Great Orchid Species for Every Collection ”, Tom Harper of Stones River Orchids presented “ The Twelve Most Important Phalaenopsis Species in Today ’ s Hybrids ” and Erich Michel of Michel Orchid Nursery offered “ Unusual Orchid Species from Madagascar ”. The lectures were well received and we had a membership table set up for the IPA where we signed up two new members from our region .
Region 3 : Northwest - Joan Bateman Don ’ t miss hearing Tom Harper , IPA president , give the keynote address at our October 15th Regional Meeting at Orchidaceae , Inc ., 2022 Wallula Avenue , Walla Walla , WA 99362 . Always engaging and interesting , Tom ’ s presentation will cover “ The 12 Most Important Phalaenopsis Species influencing today ’ s Modern Phalaenopsis Hybrids ”. He will examine 12 species and their influence in yesterday ’ s and today ’ s Phalaenopsis hybrids . A round table discussion on Phalaenopsis culture with Tom Harper , Mark Srull and David Edgley will follow covering topics that will help Phal growers from all parts of the Pacific Northwest achieve maximum results . David Edgley is an accredited AOS judge ( probationary ) who grows stunning Phalaenopsis on the west side of the mountains . Mark Srull is the grower / owner of Orchidaceae located on the eastern side of Washington State .
Region 6 : North TX , OK , Region 7 : South TX & Region 8 : LA , AR — Olie Garrison The first week of August , the eyes of Texas were on Carlos Fighetti , the current First Vice President of the IPA . Fighetti , a former president of the AOS gave 7 talks on Phalaenopsis in 7 days . The speaking marathon began in Fort Worth on August 1 , then on to Austin , then Corpus Christi , then Houston , then San Antonio , back to Houston for the summer workshop , and finishing in Dallas Sunday August 7 . He gave two different Phalaenopsis programs , one on the newer species , the other on current breeding in Taiwan . He also moderated the session on Phalaenopsis culture at the Houston Summer Workshop .
Region 13 : Piedmont - Linda Thorne On Saturday , August 20th , 2011 , the Carolinas Judging Center had a very special guest for our training session . None other than our very own Carlos Fighetti who gave the American
Orchid Society judges a presentation on how to judge Phalaenopsis . His presentation included a discussion of the new breeding trends in today ’ s Taiwanese Phalaenopsis and what future trends we can look forward to seeing in Phalaenopsis produced overseas . Exciting new multiforal Phals and perfectly shingled white Phals were also viewed . Yet , my favorites were the yellow Phals with the harlequin influence . Carlos explained that the random bold spotting that judges were made to think is a trait of the harlequin type breeding is a thing of the past . Now we should see flowers perfectly spaced with harlequin markings in perfect uniformity on each flower . Some very beautiful examples were shown .
I had no idea that a single Phalaenopsis grown in Taiwan can sell for $ 10,000 and upwards just to be mass produced by cloning and then made available to the box stores in the US . With that said and the rise in heating costs here in the United States , I am fearful that more of our United States orchid farmers that produce Phals from seed are a dying breed . Since most of these mass-produced clones do not denote a clonal name , it makes it nearly impossible for the AOS judges not to make the mistake of awarding these imported clones ( virtually the same plant ) over and over again . Most judges would currently love the opportunity to see a batch of seed produced Phals exhibited in the judging centers . Genetic diversity is fun and we can all learn from it . Get out your toothpicks !
Region 12 : Southeast - Tom Harper Plans are being finalized for the February 2012 winter meeting with our return to Peach State Orchids in Woodstock , Georgia . Stay tuned to the next Journal and the IPA website for an announcement of our meeting date . Featured on our program will be David Kessler from Marietta , GA . David is a Probationary Judge in the Atlanta Judging Center and well known in the center for his excellent growing ability . Recently David wowed the Atlanta Center with a superb program on Harlequin Phalaneopsis and their orgins from Phal . Golden Peoker . David has agreed to present his PowerPoint program to us . In addition , we will have a Phalaenopsis cultural discussion , an auction to raise monies for the IPA Color Fund , an opportunity to tour the nursery for your favorite plants , plus a few surprises . It ’ s sure to be a fun day ! Hope you can join us !
