How To Build Mental Agility By Getting Rid of Clutter
Everything we’re talking about here obviously takes willpower. I have found that true willpower, the
kind you can depend on, the willpower that endures, simply cannot co-exist with negative and re-
stricting thoughts.
We need to identify the reasons why you are focused on success, and work on ways of drawing
every piece of strength from them.
In my book, Life DIY, I broke down the process of cleaning out all the mental clutter into 12 steps.
You may or may not need to work on each of these. That’s something we’ll identify when we first
start working together.
But you can definitely expect to discover powerful new ways to sharpen your mental focus simply by
how you shape your thoughts.
We will get rid of the clutter of negative thinking that erodes willpower, and tugs you away from be-
ing a proactive leader. We’ll reduce the amount of time you spend in reactive mode. Your leadership
is at its most effective when you have the ability to focus solely on the issues that are essential.
Just as a talented athlete tunes out everything but the task at hand, and just as this athlete has the
discipline to bypass distractions, you too will develop this skill.
We will put an end to the destructive second-guessing and uncertainty that tarnishes effective lead-
ership. We will replace this with thinking that is defined by decisiveness, clarity, and confidence.
This is a cornerstone of what you can expect from my executive coaching.
These leaders seem to be able to see what they couldn’t see before. They take a more appropriate
and proactive role in guiding their organization forward. They nurture an environment where people
are actually inspired by challenge, rather than finding ways to avoid it.
