Make the muzzle irresistible
The sure-fire way to teach a dog to love their muzzle is with their favourite snacks. Smear something soft, smelly, and tasty on both the outside and the inside of the muzzle, such as dog-friendly peanut butter, squeezy cheese, or liver paste. Then simply hold the muzzle out to your dog.
They will probably start licking the outside and think,“ what a wonderful thing this is!”. Then they may move to the inside, pushing their nose in further and further to reach the tasty treats. Resist the urge to push the muzzle further onto their face or fasten the straps. At this stage, take it slowly and allow your dog to learn that the muzzle is entirely positive and stress-free. for 10 – 15 seconds while they remain comfortable.
First fasten: keep it brief and positive
Now, and only now, are you ready to fasten the clip or buckle on the muzzle. Keep a treat nearby. Fasten the muzzle, reward your dog instantly, then immediately remove the muzzle again. How does your dog respond? If they try to push their nose back into the muzzle, then you know you’ re on the right track: they want to wear the muzzle! If your dog hesitates, consider taking a step back to rebuild their confidence.

Extending wear time and checking fit
Once your dog is comfortable wearing the fastened muzzle for 5 – 10 seconds, you can start asking for simple tricks like“ sit” or“ paw”. This is also a good time to check the fit properly. The muzzle shouldn’ t be too tight or too loose: a gap of around 1 – 2cm between the tip of your dog’ s nose and the end of the muzzle is ideal. The straps should hold the muzzle snugly and securely in place as your dog moves. Some muzzles have straps that go over a dog’ s forehead as well as around the head, and some may include an additional loop that allows you to attach the muzzle to a collar.
