Muzzle up

How to teach your dog to love wearing their muzzle.

Last edition, we discussed how teaching your dog to wear a basket muzzle is one of the most important skills any dog can learn. This time, we’ ll cover how to choose the right-sized muzzle for your dog and how to teach your dog to love wearing it.
Getting the fit right first
Just like choosing a pair of shoes for ourselves, the size and fit of a basket muzzle is important for comfort and safety. You can measure the length and circumference of your dog’ s nose and the distance around their neck to choose the correct size. Many pet shops will help you with sizing or allow you to return a muzzle if it is too small or too large, so don’ t be afraid to ask.
Once worn, the muzzle should allow your dog to open their mouth at least halfway, as this allows your dog to pant, drink, and take treats while wearing it. Panting and drinking allow your dog to regulate their temperature normally, even on warmer days.
