I think that summer school requirements are unfair. Kids don’t want to spend time in school during the summer because they need a break from school, they want to play around outside and go on vacations and other trips, and kids are not as focused in a classroom in the summer time. Having school over summer is a terrible idea, and here are my reasons why.

Taking away their summer is not a good thing for kids. They need a break from school, and more school over the summer does not give them that break. Nine months is already a long time of sitting in class in school and trying to stay focused on learning, and three months of summer is not even as long as nine months, so why take away their three month break?

Three weeks of summer school is a little over half of one month. Do kids really want to sit in school for three weeks when they could be using the warm summer days to exercise and play outside? Also, many kids take vacations with their families or attend summer camps, which is still a way to learn new things. In the summer, kids can improve their physical health by spending time outdoors, and they can learn new things on family trips and at camps.

Furthermore, summer school can be a waste of time for kids when they cannot focus very well in a classroom in the middle of the summer. The best time to teach kids is during the school year when they know they have to focus on learning; during the summer is the worst time they can teach kids because kids would rather be almost anywhere else than in school in the summer. I know some people think that if kids fail a subject, they need the summer to make it up. However, if kids fail a subject and need extra help, they can stay after school during the regular school year for tutoring to get caught up in that subject. During regular school would be a more productive way to deal with the problem of kids failing than during the summer because kids are more focused during the regular school year.

In conclusion, summer school requirements are not fair. Kids need a break from school, they need outside time and family time, and they do not focus as well in the summer as they do during the school year. For these reasons, summer school is a waste of time and is not a productive way to help kids get caught up.
