proud of our class. They have shown a true passion for some of the topics that relate to and impact their daily lives.

Coinciding with reading persuasive text, the class had to produce a persuasive essay over a school topic. The topics consisted of: cafeteria food, dress code, UIL, summer school require-ments, the moment of silence, and school holi-days. I lectured the students on the importance of stating reasons to support your side of an argu-ment. They were also introduced to persuasive techniques that are used in advertisements. Mrs. Kuck, my co-teacher, lectured the students on debate terms and how to hold an actual debate.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for preparing them for middle and high school debate topics, but the exposure and terminology will help prepare them for future educational experiences. I know the students appreciated the challenge that was thrown their way. My hope is that all who read this magazine will walk away with new ideas and points-of-view. We are all blessed with a brain that allows us to think differently so don’t be ashamed to share your point of view throughout life.
