Indicators of Academic Achievement

3rd Gr. Reading Scores Continue to Impress

Perkiomen Valley’ s goal is to have all students reading on or above grade level by the conclusion of third grade.
2015-16 PSSA English / Language Arts Scores Percent Proficient / Advanced in Gr. 3
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education:“ Research reveals that reading proficiently by the end of third grade can be a‘ make-or-break’ benchmark in a child’ s educational development. Academic success, as defined by high school graduation, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by knowing a child’ s reading skills by the end of third grade.”
Our work to reach this goal begins as early as kindergarten. We make every effort to enhance the reading abilities of those students who demonstrate they are readers, as well as focus on the specific needs of students who struggle.

What is the PSSA?

The PSSA is a standards-based, criterion-referenced assessment intended to measure a student’ s knowledge of the Pennsylvania academic standards in English / language arts( formerly reading and writing), mathematics, and science. PV uses PSSA scores, along with academic growth data and other assessments, to measure student achievement and to determine what adjustments might need to be made to instructional practices so that students continue to achieve at high levels.
The charts on this page and page 6 show how PV’ s PSSA scores compare to the state average and the average scores from surrounding districts.
