The outside of the building
will almost make you think that
you are in the wrong place, as its
exterior is not as ornate as its in-
side.
The Golden Altar is actually
made of carved wood that was
overlaid with gold flake. It is a
place surrounded by old pirate
stories on pillage and raids that
have given the place a little fan-
tasy touch.
You can also find the church
of San Francisco de Asis, in front
of Parque Bolivar in Avenida B.
Standing on the waterfront, next
to the Panamanian Department
of Foreign Affairs and Trade and
across the street from the Nation-
al Theater, its exterior has been
carefully restored a few years
ago. The church has an Italian
marble altar and some French
architectural elements.
A little further, you can en-
counter the church of San Felipe
Neri. The church has been useful
for several purposes in the reli-
gious Panamanian community,
including a boarding school for
orphan children. Likewise, it was
the tabernacle for the famous
church of Santa Maria La Anti-
gua, which is now being restored.
On the Avenida Central you
can find the church of Nuestra
Señora de la Merced. It’s the only
church in Casco Antiguo that still
has its original façade, built in

the so-called Panamá La Vieja. The
venue is not only a small museum,
but also the headquarters of the
other churches. That means, it’s the
place you have to go if you want to
book a wedding venue. The cost of
the service depends on each case,
since there are not fixed prices.
If you’re not that much into reli-
gious sites, Casco offers you a wide
variety of historic sites you can
choose. According to Casco Antig-
uo’s heritage office, either squares
or other historic sites can be rented
only for the ceremony, but not the
celebration. In other words: Wed-
ding, not party.
There are many places you can
choose: Plaza Herrera, Indepen-
dencia, Bolivar, Francia, Compañia
de Jesús, Santo Domingo, Las
Bóvedas, Paseo Estaban Huertas,
among many others. The Heritage
Office says the booking costs from
$20 in public places of Casco Antig-
uo up to $100 for historic sites.
Of course, there are also private
places: In barrio San Felipe there
are countless houses and hotels
available. One of the most popular
places is the Hotel Central, recently
restored. Also Tántalo, Las Clemen-
tinas, Villa Palma, La Concordia,
and American Trade.
As you see, Casco Antiguo is not
only a place full of history, legends,
fun, walks, party, and culture, but
also a perfect venue to celebrate
love.
