TRAVEL

The true beauty of Lake Como is best enjoyed from the middle of the lake, preferably while one is comfortably seated in a luxurious boat, such as‘ Alba’. Originally used as a watertaxi in Venice, the boat was purchased then refurbished by entrepreneur Giacomo Battaglioli, her loving and faithful Captain. After picking us up with our luggage at the poolside dock at Grand Tremezzo, Giacomo took us for a one-hour tour of part of the lake. His knowledge of the luxury and historical Villas that line the shores is enormous. Find him and‘ Alba’ online at www. boat-tour. it

Village of Bellagio
At the far northern tip of Lake Como’ s Larian Triangle is the enchanting village of Bellagio. About 1.5hrs by bus from the city of Como, or slightly longer but more enjoyable by boat, this hillside town just oozes passion. Known as the“ Pearl of the Lake”, Bellagio will transport you back in time with centuries old buildings, narrow cobblestone paths and lanes, gently cascading stone steps that lead you from the water’ s edge up to the top of the village. But don’ t be fooled by the ancient appearance of this beautiful place. World-class restaurants and shops offering fine Italian wares line these picturesque walks. Sidewalk cafes are scattered throughout the village, giving visitors the opportunity for a quick snack or glass of wine … but while in one of the world’ s most romantic places you will find the urge to hurry has given way to embracing the enjoyment of life and savoring the moment.
Village of Torno
Little did we know that a short walk, in part though a decommissioned highway tunnel, from CastaDiva to the quaint village of Torno, would place us in a position to experience a world-famous gesture of Italian hospitality. Narrow pathways with cobbled steps lead down to the waterfront marina / piazza and ferry terminal. At the edge of the piazza, across from the stone church tower, we found Bar Italia B & B. After enjoying their delicious food while we viewed the edge of the Swiss Alps, the rain started. Unsure how we would get back to the hotel, the generous Rocky Castro offered us a ride back to the hotel. www. tornoallariva. it
A Lake Como tour by boat is definitely worth the investment. If I have the opportunity to experience this again I will surely increase the time on the lake, as an hour goes by very fast and there is so much to see. The two photos above are of the legendary Villa del Balbianello( also featured on page 69, the Charlotte and Pierre wedding) and a view of a natural waterfall that runs through the middle of the village of Nesso.
