We can’ t wait to celebrate with you at the launch party and finally share all the work that’ s gone into this edition.
This month we were lucky enough to be asked to take part in the annual UK conference for Latin American studies, held at the University of Bristol this year. We hosted a round table accompanied by Júlia Belas Trindade, PhD student at the University of Bristol and women’ s football journalist, and Grace Livingstone, affiliate lecturer at the University of Cambridge and journalist on Latin American issues. We discussed in depth the trials and tribulations of reporting on Latin American issues to UK audiences. It was truly inspiring to hear about both Júlia and Grace’ s experiences of reporting on Latin America in the UK, and we found it particularly interesting to hear about the relationship between their academic and journalistic backgrounds.
One important takeaway was the prevalence of stereotypes about Latin America that are often perpetuated in UK coverage, namely, the failure of UK news outlets to acknowledge the plurality and diversity of the region and the stories it has to offer, privileging instead familiar tropes which“ sell stories”. Júlia and Grace offered some incredibly interesting insights into their profession- we hope that the content of this edition reflects some of what we learnt from them! The Editors-in-Chief
