Jake: Which industries and applications benefit most from evaporative cooling technology, and why is the technology particularly effective in these environments?
Dean: The suitability of evaporative cooling depends more on the environment than the industry itself. It is widely used in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, logistics centres, agricultural buildings, sports facilities, and other large spaces with high heat loads and occupancy levels.
As UK temperatures continue to rise, many businesses are turning to evaporative cooling as an energy-efficient solution. However, applications requiring precise temperature and humidity control, such as clean rooms, pharmaceutical facilities, and some electronics manufacturing environments, are often better suited to alternative technologies.
Jake: How does effective temperature control through evaporative cooling improve employee comfort, wellbeing and productivity in industrial and also, I guess, commercial workplace?
Dean: Thermal comfort is influenced by more than temperature alone. Factors such as air movement, humidity, radiant heat, and indoor air quality all play a significant role in how people experience their working environment.
In many industrial settings, such as laundries, production facilities, or areas close to ovens and machinery, temperatures can become extremely high, creating uncomfortable and potentially challenging working conditions. Direct evaporative cooling helps by introducing large volumes of fresh air, increasing airflow, and reducing heat build-up.
This not only improves thermal comfort but also enhances indoor air quality by removing stale air and diluting airborne contaminants. Good ventilation is increasingly recognised as an important contributor to employee wellbeing, workplace satisfaction, and retention. By reducing heat stress and fatigue, evaporative cooling can help improve concentration, productivity, and overall workplace performance.
Jake: What are the key advantages of evaporative cooling compared with traditional refrigerated air conditioning systems, would you say?
Dean: Direct evaporative cooling and refrigeration-based air conditioning serve different purposes. Refrigeration systems provide precise temperature control, while evaporative cooling is primarily a comfort cooling and ventilation solution.
Evaporative cooling uses the natural process of water evaporation, making it far more energy-efficient than conventional air conditioning. It also continuously introduces fresh outside air, helping to improve indoor air quality and manage heat build-up.
Unlike refrigeration systems, evaporative cooling does not use refrigerant gases, eliminating the need for F-Gas compliance, leak detection, and associated maintenance requirements.
Jake: in terms of a healthy, healthier working environment and just air quality in general, how does evaporative cooling support healthier working environments and improve the indoor air quality itself?
Dean: Discussions around the building performance focuses on energy efficiency and temperature control, but good ventilation is really important in creating a healthier, productive indoor environment. I think, you know, it became much more widely understood during the pandemic. Attention was drawn into the role of ventilation, reducing concentration of airborne contaminants within, you know, occupied or heavily occupied spaces.
And, but, you know, ventilation should not always be considered during periods of public health concern. It remains fundamental, you know, to managing indoor air quality, controlling the heat buildup, creating a comfortable environment for people to work in, to learn, you know, and spend time in it, you know, that’ s what we’ re you know, we should all be concerned and pay attention to what’ s required to remain healthy in these type of environments.
Jake: As businesses place greater focus on sustainability, energy efficiency, and workplace conditions, what role will evaporative cooling play in the future of industrial climate control?
Dean: The future of climate control is unlikely to be defined by a single technology. Instead, businesses are increasingly seeking solutions that balance employee wellbeing, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and sustainability.
Direct evaporative cooling will continue to play an important role in large industrial and commercial environments, providing effective comfort cooling, fresh air, and heat management with low operating costs. Meanwhile, advances in indirect evaporative cooling are expanding its use in humiditysensitive applications, including data centres and other mission-critical facilities, where energy efficiency and reliable operating conditions are essential.
