ENERGYNEST signs commercial agreement with LEONHARD KURZ to decarbonize industrial manufacturing facility with its thermal storage
ENERGYNEST, the global leader in thermal energy storage solutions, has signed a commercial agreement with LEONHARD KURZ, a worldleading family business in thinfilm technology, to implement an innovative power-to-heat system with thermal storage.
This commercial sale of ENERGYNEST’ s power-to-heat system will decarbonize over 70 % of the heat demand at KURZ’ s Sulzbach-Rosenberg facility, reducing natural gas consumption by more than 3.5GWh per year, and cutting more than 700 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Industrial manufacturing including chemicals companies like KURZ, and others in production of food and beverage, and paper and pulp, have heavy heat requirements and outputs. ENERGYNEST’ s thermal storage enables these companies to optimize their energy costs while decarbonizing. This is achieved through drawing electricity from the grid or from on-site renewables, at times of abundance and low cost, creating heat on-demand and reducing reliance on higher carbon gas, producing a positive outcome for both the power and heat-intensive industry and the environment.
ENERGYNEST CEO, Alex Robertson, said:“ Electrification of industrial heat is essential for decarbonizing global manufacturing and supply chains. By partnering with LEONHARD KURZ, ENERGYNEST is showcasing a scalable and effective decarbonization strategy that can be replicated worldwide. This agreement proves that industrial energy transition is not simply a necessity. It’ s happening now.”
ENERGYNEST’ s turnkey power-toheat solution, featuring a 3 MWe electrical heater and a 12 MWhth ThermalBattery™, will be integrated into KURZ’ s existing thermal oil infrastructure, providing stable, on-demand heat while drastically reducing the facility’ s reliance on natural gas.
First-of-its kind
The landmark agreement is ENERGYNEST’ s first power-toheat deal, and the first-of-itskind power-to-heat with thermal storage. The deal demonstrates scalability of ENERGYNEST’ s technology and shows that it can rapidly decarbonize large swathes of hard-to-abate industries. With LEONHARD KURZ’ s global footprint, the success of this system demonstrates the crossborder potential for power-to-heat technology to decarbonize industrial sectors worldwide.
Front footed companies with ambitious decarbonization targets are getting ahead of the curve using thermal storage – testing its applicability and the carbon and cost savings and flexibility it affords at their plants, well before mandatory net zero targets start to bite.
As ENERGYNEST’ s first commercial thermal storage deal in the German market, this milestone underpins the Company’ s growth in the industrial manufacturing sector in Germany, following successful deals including with Yara, ENI, and Avery Dennison.
