I know I have said this about other cit-
ies, but Boston is near and dear to my
heart. In 1997 Rip and I moved there
for him to pursue his Master in Design
Studies degree at Harvard and for me
to work with the world-renowned
landscape architect Martha Schwartz. It
was such an exciting time for both of
us. We decided we wanted to be close
to everything, so Rip found us a flat in
the Back Bay Area. Our place had gor-
geous 15-foot ceilings and moldings to
die for, but it was one room (not even
a bedroom) with a kitchen and bath-
room. I almost cried when we couldn’t
fit the couch and had to settle for a
love seat and club chair by the fabu-
lous carved marble fireplace. The rent
was more than our mortgage on our
starter home in Charlotte, but it was an
adventure and something wonderful
to do before you have kids.
Although we were both in Cambridge
most of the time, we loved exploring
Boston proper and all the wonderful
foodie neighborhoods. Since we both
studied in Italy and love Italian food and
wine, the North End was our favorite,
from the tried and true restaurants to the
tiny hole-in-the-wall places with seven
tables. We also loved walking over to
