Aptly called the American Riviera,
Santa Barbara proves to be a gem
beyond compare. Nestled between the
steeply rising Santa Ynez Mountains
and the Pacific Ocean, with a Mediterranean climate and mild ocean breezes,
this Southern California hot spot is
perfect for gardening year-round. The
gardens thrive with fruit trees—persimmons, peaches, pears, blood oranges,
limes and lemons—plus fresh vegetables, perennials and chicken coops.
With such a temperate climate and no
mosquitos or flies to dampen the party,
entertaining outdoors is a way of life.
While visiting Santa Barbara recently,
I was able to tour several exquisite
gardens. So instead of featuring one
garden, we have combined many to
bring you as many gorgeous pictures
as possible. In addition to our garden
tours, we had a wonderful time sampling the city’s cuisine and meeting
locals. Spending time with talented
jewelry designer Alina de Albergaria
was a true pleasure, and I hope one
day to try her Plumcello made from
the plums in her garden. I also especially love the feature on Valerie Rice,
