Some of the oldest documents in the archives date back to 1933 . Membership of the society then cost half a crown for a year (~ 12.5p in today ’ s money ) and one Guinea for life membership (~£ 1.05 in today ’ s money ). By 1980 membership cost £ 18.50 for 5 years . Current student membership costs only £ 50 for 5 years . The LMSS weekly meetings , known as the ordinary meeting , were used as a gathering for medical students with almost weekly meetings used as a social occasion . Medical students would attend a lecture or debate on a Thursday evening with sometimes over 300 attending . At these meetings tea would be served , which would be purchased in Woolworths using £ 3 in petty cash .
Some of the Sphincter Magazines in the University of Liverpool Special Archives date from the 1960 ’ s ! Although we could not figure out the exact date that the first sphincter was published (? 1937 ) it would seem that it has been running for well over 70 years . The Archives also hold some LMSS Fresher ’ s guides which date back to the 1980 ’ s . Although 40 years ago , the timetable is very similar to what current students experience . It was also wonderful to see one of the Sphincters from 1962 / 63 referring to the creation of the Liverpool Medical Student Performing Arts Society - Artefacts - which continues to go strong as it approaches its 60th anniversary .
First Year and Clinical Year Timetables from 1982 / 83 Freshers Guide ( Archives Reference A011 / 50 )
Looking to the future , the LMSS continues to go from strength to strength as it moulds into a truly 21st century organisation . The Liverpool Medical Student Society was set up for the students of the Liverpool Medical School and should continue to serve their means .
