A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE
LIVERPOOL MEDICAL STUDENTS SOCIETY
The Liverpool Medical Student Society ( LMSS ) was founded in 1874 , then known as the Liverpool Medical Student Debating Society . With over 148 years of history this makes LMSS the oldest medical student society in the country .
During the 20th century the Liverpool Medical Student Debating Society was renamed into M . S . S or Medical Student Society . During this time the society continued to host a vast range of events including dinners , debates , lectures , and ordinary meetings , many of which continue to this day . The society is steeped in tradition and history with events such as the Annual dinner having been running for over 120 years . The LMSS gained charitable status in 2016 after the “ smoker scandal ” and subsequent de-ratification from the Liverpool Guild of Students and University of Liverpool . In recent years , the LMSS has become part of the University of Liverpool ’ s Association of Clinical Societies in conjunction with the Dentists and Veterinary Students , regaining its association with the University of Liverpool .
The new found charity status has allowed the LMSS to flourish . Since 2016 , the LMSS has raised in excess of £ 150,000 for charities including Claire House , Wirral Mind , Water Aid , Wirral Heartbeat and the Whitechapel centre . The Liverpool Medical Student Society continues to hold more than 20 different events every year several being attended by over 500 students . In writing this article , we visited the University of Liverpool ’ s Special Archives which holds a collection of old LMSS books , documents and magazines that were donated by previous LMSS committees .
