Qigong
Is
lands Fitness offers Qigong classes. Many people do not
know about it. That’s why I decided to write about it in
this month’s column.
Qigong is pronounced “Chee Gung”.
It is an ancient Chinese practice
going back several thousand years.
Qi means energy and Gong means
skill. Together, Qigong is the skill
of attracting vital energy. Qigong is
also the act of moving the Qi energy
throughout the body in order to restore
balance. Qigong has demonstrated to
have many beneficial effects on the
body including better circulation,
lowering blood pressure, improving
the immune system, and reducing
stress.
The movements are typically repeated, strengthening and
stretching the body, increasing fluid movement, and enhancing
balance.
The movements are slow and rhythmical and include deep
breathing exercises into the movements. Just about anyone
can do Qigong. Our class includes soothing music that has
sounds of water, birds, bells and other sounds to relax and calm.
The instructor stands in front of the class and demonstrates the
move to perform. The students simply mimic the instructor.
There is very little talking during the
class. Each move has a specific name
which is announced before the move is
performed.
The class runs about an hour. At the end
of each class, the students are lead in a
“laughing” exercise where all students
are told to start laughing. This becomes
very contagious and the laughter grows
louder as each person succumbs to the
laughter. This laughter is the final key
to the feel good stress reduction that
this class offers. The classes are currently being offered each
Tuesday and Thursday at 10:00 am. The cost is $5.00 per class
and is free to Islands Fitness members. Come try out this class
if you can. I think you will really enjoy it.
