Part 1 The Opinion Quagmire If you’re curious about the title, it’s kind of a sequel to my earlier “Who am I?” article and the recent Rachael Dolezal’s altered identity Larry Wonderling uproar. Consider it a metaphor about why so many of us fallible humans have fierce opinions about some of life’s specious questions. As we humans obtain such psychosocial “facts” to questions, we tend to forget that those answers are simply unverifiable opinions based on other opinions, including our race. Yet, most of our beliefs, biases, convictions, and traditions in civilized societies may eventually translate into coveted facts or laws. When I read of the uproar over Dolezal’s birth to white parents, I half snickered with a “so what?” Compared to her clearly more relevant personal black identity and lifestyle, she was probably already emerging as black when, at age five, she Quality Rehabilitation drew herself using a brown crayon. She’s been an advocate of blacks virtually her entire life, including the head of the Seattle, Washington NAACP, part time African studies instructor, and chair of an oversight committee that monitors fairness in police activities. She also had a black husband and two adopted black boys, etc. It’s further noted that since 1950, science has concluded that the term “race” is not a scientifically distinct biological entity. It’s simply a cultural label or civilized way of distinguishing between groups. I may be a personal example of those fuzzy assumptions regarding racial purity in our civilized cultures. My grandmother admitted having an affair with a black man, resulting in the birth of my mother, who was a dark complexioned beauty of the “Lena Horn” type. When she and grandma revealed this shocking event to me in my teens, my question then was, “so what?” and it still is. As for the questionnaire lurking below, I simply need your personal opinions, while hopefully stimulating a thoughtful involvement with this article. So have fun with your anticipated frowns and grins. I’ll share my opinions with you next month in Part two. 1) As humans, what beliefs, attitudes, political preferences, religious orientation or laws are we born with?
