What should you do as an employer?
• Remove questions about salary history from application process (and documents).
• Instruct HR and any staff involved in the hiring process that they must not inquire
about candidate’s salary (including benefits) history.
• Instruct any external agencies that you may use that they must not inquire about
candidate’s salary (including benefits) history.
• Ensure compensation for a role is determined based on objective data about the
role and not based on the salary data of candidates – record the methodology.
• Ensure that HR and other staff are instructed to record clearly if a candidate
voluntarily discloses their salary. And note that this salary history may be used to
determine compensation.
