Breed All About It !

Spotlight on : The Boston Terrier

Description : Boston Terriers have compact , muscular little bodies and a unique “ tuxedo ” coat , that comes in black and white , black , brindle , and white , brindle and white , seal and white , and seal , brindle , and white . But their most notable features are their large , round eyes and intelligent expression .
Temperament : Bostons are highly affectionate , well-mannered dogs that get along with all members of the family , including children and other pets . They do well in just about any kind of home , city or country , and even small apartments . Bred to be companions , they are wonderful playmates for kids , but can be just as content to be a companion for an elderly person or couple . This breed generally has a happy , friendly , and lovable temperament . They also love to play and have a comical side to them , much to the delight of their owners . The Boston Terrier is people-oriented , preferring to be around their humans as much as possible . They can be a great choice for a first-time dog owner that ' s looking for a small dog . Their intelligence and eagerness to please makes them highly trainable and quick to pick up on tricks , but they can also have a bit of a stubborn streak common to Terriers .
Average Height / Weight : Between 12 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder ; weight ranges from 12 to 25 pounds .
Health Issues : Bostons are prone to some hereditary health issues , including eye problems like cataracts , corneal ulcers , and glaucoma . Because their eyes are large and prominent , they are prone to dryness and irritation , and should be checked regularly for signs of redness or discomfort . Congenital deafness is more common in Boston Terriers than many other breeds of dog . Being a brachycephalic ( flat-faced ) breed , they can also suffer from breathing difficulties and are susceptible to overheating in humid or hot weather . Their short coats make them less tolerant of cold . Subluxated patellas can also be an issue .
Life Expectancy : 13 to 15 years
Exercise : Despite their small size , Boston Terriers are active , high-energy canines that need about an hour of exercise a day . They tend to do well in dog sports , such as flyball and agility , but would be just as happy to catch a frisbee , play a game of fetch , or take a romp with the kids . Keep in mind , though , that like other brachycephalic breeds , Bostons can overheat easily and should be allowed to rest when needed .
Grooming : This low maintenance breed generally needs little more than basic grooming , as their short coat doesn ’ t shed much . A weekly brushing with a soft-bristle brush and a monthly bath should suffice .
