Quick Guide to Hanukkah
Hanukkah: a minor Jewish holiday that became a major one in America in response to
Christmas. Alternatively spelled Chanukah, it means “Festival of Lights” and celebrates
the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in the year 165 BCE.
Hanukkah menorah: a nine-branched candlestick used only during the eight day celebration of Hanukkah.
Shamash: the “helper” candle in the menorah, it is used to light all other candles. It is
always set either higher or lower than the other candles.
Prayer:
Hebrew: Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-Olam, asher kiddeshanu b’mitzvotav,
vitzivanu, lehadlik ner shel Hanukkah.
English: Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who has sanctified us with
Your commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the lights of Hanukkah.
