My Brave Grandfather Maddie Tomalonis- 6th grade

This piece of writing is dedicated to my grandfather. My grandfather survived cardiac arrest heart failure. In this piece of writing you will learn about his experience and what it was like for his family as well. You will also learn what a brave and courageous person he was during that time.

My dad, and grandfather were driving, and my grandfather says,“ I don’ t feel good pull over”, So my dad does. My grandfather then passes out as his foot came down from the car gently falling to the ground. The ambulance came immediately. It was like in the blink of an eye. They rushed him to the hospital on September 29, 2020. My grandfather was in the hospital for a total of eleven days. While he was rushed to the hospital covid was also just starting. This impacted my family. This impacted my family, because this limited the time we had to go visit him. So when we went to visit him only one person could go at a time, and with that we only had a few minutes to check in on him, and not only that, but I could not go see him, because I was too young.

When my grandfather was in the hospital he was in the ICU. He needed to be brave, and think positively. My grandfather had tubes in his throat, down his arms, and he was hooked up to a breathing machine. While he was hooked up to all of this equipment he needed to have surgeries. The surgeon Dr. Chima performed surgery on his heart. When Dr. Chima did this, he opened up his chest. He needed a double bypass and aortic value replacement. While this was happening, I was at home worrying constantly about him. A few days later he was able to call me on the phone. Once I heard his voice, I immediately started crying. I bet I could’ ve filled the Hudson River. After I heard him, and got over my tears my grandfather says,“ why are you crying? I’ m coming home don’ t you worry there’ s nothing to be scared about”. I was in shock, and started crying even more. Then we talked for a little longer, and eventually hung up. That night I went to bed happy knowing he was coming home. It wasn’ t just him who needed to be brave, it was my whole family. My grandfathers neighbors even came over to support him, too.

My grandfather was always positive he’ d come home, and he did. My grandfather who we call pop shows bravery and courage every day no matter the weather. That is why I choose to write this piece about him. After reading this I hope you understand what he went though. My grandfathers bravery, and positivity is like a dragon flying through fire.
