Diet and Nutrition

Eating healthfully when you have COPD may not be easy at times . A lack of energy or a change in taste due to medicines you take can impact your diet . Eating a healthful diet is an important part of your COPD self-care because :
• A well-nourished body is better able to fight off infection .
• Healthful eating helps maintain body strength .
• Avoiding certain foods can decrease shortness of breath and improve breathing .

What to Include in Your Diet

• Eat protein foods first . Include at least one source of protein at each meal . Good sources of protein include meat , chicken , fish , eggs , cheese , and peanut butter .
• Drink at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of non-caffeinated fluids every day unless your healthcare provider has instructed you to restrict your fluids .
• Include lots of fruits and vegetables . They are good sources of important vitamins , minerals , and antioxidants .
• Increase your intake of foods high in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon , tuna , walnuts , and flaxseed .

What to Limit in Your Diet

• Limit gas-producing foods that may cause bloating . These may include brussels sprouts , cabbage , broccoli , cauliflower , cucumbers , sauerkraut , onions , radishes , dried peas and beans , cantaloupe , watermelon , apples , fried foods , and carbonated drinks .
• Avoid large portions and overeating . This fills the stomach and puts more pressure on the diaphragm .
• Limit sodium to 2000 mg or less per day . Sodium can increase the amount of fluid in the body , making it harder to breathe .

Tips for Meals

• Choose meals that are easy to prepare so you can save your energy for eating .
• Ask your family and friends for help with grocery shopping and preparing meals .
• Eat smaller , more frequent meals , rather than three large meals a day .
• Have your biggest meal when you have the most energy — often first thing in the morning .
• Take small bites and chew slowly .
• Sit upright while eating .
• Drink liquids after finishing your meal to avoid feeling too full .
• If prescribed , wear oxygen while eating .
Talk with your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about your diet . You may need to meet with a dietitian for more guidance .
