Nutrition for a Healing Heart Eating a healthful diet after open heart surgery is important to promote healing. Good nutrition helps to prevent infection, to increase strength and endurance, and to aid in a speedy recovery. Good nutrition plays a key role in helping incisions to heal. Nutrients and oxygen must reach the tissues of the wound in order for healing to occur. Key nutrients for wound healing include protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, and fluids. You may not have your usual appetite at first. Try to follow the guidelines below to help you in your recovery. As your appetite improves in about 1 to 2 months after surgery, adjust your diet to include heart-healthy foods, which may be different from the suggestions listed for healing. Some heart-healthy choices are listed on page 50. If you attend outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, you will receive more information on a heart-healthy diet. Fluids • Drink 6 to 8 cups of fluid each day to remain hydrated. • Good drink choices include milk, juice, milkshakes, and water. • You may want to try over-the-counter nutrition supplements such as Ensure®, Boost®, and Carnation Instant Breakfast® if your appetite remains poor. • Limit caffeine, which is found in coffee, tea, and sodas.
