Returning citizens housed at Metro Reentry Facility ( RF ) began painting murals of iconic Atlanta symbols throughout the facility upon its opening in 2018 to create a community atmosphere . The vision of the murals was thought of by Warden Perkins , who then recruited some of the facility ’ s mentors to beautify the facility .
The murals , also known as the ‘ The Atlanta Art Project ,’ were designed to change the prison environment , thus creating a change in the men . Areas such as in-take , meeting rooms , and visitation rooms were all painted with beautiful murals representing the city of Atlanta . Since the beginning of the project , returning citizens have painted 18 murals throughout the facility .
The returning citizens behind the murals say that the project made them reflect on where they came from and look ahead to where they are going . The artists hope that the men in the program will see the iconic scenes of Atlanta , depicting Stone Mountain , Centennial Olympic Park , CNN Center , Georgia Aquarium , and many more , which will help create a new outlook on their future .
