PATCHES – CLARENCE CARTER
We can see in Patches lyrics that even in a harrowing family situation, people are capable to extract the most human poems. Narrating some events happening successively to this family, Clarence Carter tells us a sad story this character who had lost his father too soon and, hence all the hard work of a tuff life in the fields last for this boy, the older son.
Sometimes Patches considered to run away from home, but he stopped thinking this way because he could still hear his Papa´s word asking him to handle. When he just mentioned to quit school he his mother remembered him his father’s rules to never give up.
So, finding strength in his mother’s prays, Patches kept moving forward. And then mama had also passed away, his brothers had grown up and Patches could still hear Papa’s voice confirming his hardship was not about to end. And with all the lessons learned he could follow through.
These lyrics are a strong poem to remind us how hard can be some people’s life and also how a human tragedy can extract such intense words.
