A
s a competitor, few horses
have created such an international wave of frenzied excitement as Totilas has. Breaking
records and fitting nicely into our
grown up fantasies of jet black stallions with silky smooth coats and the
presence of a giant.
When it was first announced that the super
horse and dressage sensation, Totilas, would
be standing at stud to a limited number of
hand selected mares the dressage breeding
community met the challenge. A flood of applications from around the world allowed for
Totilas' first foal crop to be from arguably the
best dressage mares available with owners
that could pay the hefty stud fee.
Not everyone shared the enthusiasm for the
KWPN son of Trakehner Gribaldi. Well respected
old school breeders from Europe held back and
did not breed to Totilas. Their reason was pure,
practical logic. Yes, Totilas has good bloodlines
and yes, he is an amazing competitor. But, what
can he produce as a sire? Unwilling to pay a
large stud fee for an "unproven" sire, these
breeders had issued an unofficial challege for
Totilas.
That brings us to 2014. The first Totilas foals
are now undersaddle and have gone through
stallion licensing. While not old enough to be
proven as FEI competitors, it is still time to take
a look at what Totilas is as a sire.
When looking at Totilas offspring from around
the world, the first thing that strikes you is the
easy confidence and presence these horses
have, even at a very young age. As a whole,
their movement is strong with good clarity
seen at all three gaits. The canter seems to
be the most extravagant movement on Totilas
offspring.
So far, Totilas has sired three licensed sons. Tolegro, pictured at left, was licensed in 2013 and
bred more than 130 mares in the 2014 season.
Approved in 2014 is Glock's Toto Jr, purchased
for Edward Gal, pictured above.
Bernadette Brune from Monaco, owner of
Tolegro says of her young stallion: "He has the
sweetest character ever!".
Sweet dispositions are coming through as another Totilas stamp on his foals.
These owners were rewarded with record
breaking sales prices for their weanlings and a
waiting list of customers.
