Additional Funding for Apprenticeship Program — Offerings Expanded
PHSC received $ 956,346.00 through the Expansion of Registered Apprenticeship and Preapprenticeship ( ERAP ) Grant , which offers funds to state and technical colleges to begin or expand upon existing apprenticeship programs . PHSC already has an apprenticeship program in place , and it is growing in student enrollment and engagement while also placing our students into the workforce .
PHSC ’ s President Timothy L . Beard , Ph . D ., says , “ We are delighted that PHSC is receiving additional resources to reimagine career and technical education in Hernando and Pasco counties . This important grant underscores Governor DeSantis ’ commitment to distinguish Florida as the premier state in the nation for workforce education by 2030 .”
Graduates from PHSC ’ s apprenticeship program receive excellent opportunities for training and developing strong relationships with employers while receiving on-the-job training . These programs are geared toward increasing productivity , retention and job performance . So far , PHSC has had its first successful cohort working with area apartments , providing skill training in apartment maintenance work such as HVAC , electrical , plumbing and other general repairs .
“ This critical grant funding will support PHSC ’ s focus on ensuring that we continue to meet our district and regional workforce needs via a variety of training formats . Apprenticeships provide immediate , hands-on skill training , which leads to rapid employability for our students ,” says Stanley M . Giannet , Ph . D ., Executive Vice President , Chief Academic Officer , and College Provost .
Through this grant , an expansion of the apprenticeship programs was possible , enabling PHSC to increase opportunities for students seeking a non-traditional college experience and looking to pursue a certification in the workforce . PHSC , through the Workforce Development , Career and Technical Education department now offers a new Construction & Design Apprenticeship program at the North Campus in Brooksville that began in the summer / fall semesters 2022 . The existing Apartment Maintenance Technician ( AMT ) Apprenticeship program also expanded to two campuses this summer / fall — the West Campus in New Port Richey and the Spring Hill Campus . The apprenticeship program is designed for varying groups of individuals , including those leaving the military , graduating high school or college , switching careers or those currently unemployed . And , there is no cost to students . The new Construction & Design Apprenticeship program
prepares students for the increasing need for skilled construction workers and architectural designers in a rapidly growing residential housing industry . This 12-month program includes 205 hours of in-classroom , related technical instruction and will place the apprentices with leading general contractors in the field , where they will complete 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training . Students will earn their OSHA 10 Construction certification , the Autodesk Certified AutoCAD User , the Autodesk Certified User in Revit for Architectural Design , and a PHSC certificate of completion by the end of the year-long program .
The Apartment Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship program prepares students for the increasing need for skilled service technicians in an ever-expanding rental housing industry . This 12-month program includes 183 hours of in-classroom , related technical instruction and will place the apprentices with a leading property management apartment community in the area where they will complete 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training . Students will earn their OSHA 10 certification , the Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician ( CAMT ), and a PHSC certificate of completion by the end of the year-long program .
After the apprenticeships , the new Construction & Design workers and Apartment Maintenance Technicians will have skills that are marketable nationwide . They will receive job placement assistance with leading general contractors / construction design companies or property management apartment communities as full-time construction workers / architectural designers or apartment maintenance technicians .
