KUDOS TO PHSC STUDENT ATHLETES KUDOS TO COACHES Fast-Pitch Softball PHSC Men’s Baseball Clinches 700 th Win for Head Coach Kaelin Ruiz *Debra J. Hay Outstanding Student-Athlete Sacha Olivera Most Outstanding Player Steve Winterling, PHSC Athletic Director and Men’s Baseball Head Coach, reached his 700 th career win against Florida Southern JV, in Lakeland on April 12, 2018. It was his 683 rd win at PHSC and he won 17 games serving as the head coach at Florida College in 1982. Winterling is in his 27 th year as the head coach at PHSC. He started PHSC’s first intercollegiate baseball team in March 1991 and built the PHSC program by recruiting quality student-athletes to play against top competition throughout the state of Florida. More than 30 players have signed professional contracts and many others have gone on to outstanding four-year institutions. Coaches Cross the Finish Line Men’s Basketball Adley Eliacin Most Outstanding Player Men’s Baseball Jacki Wachtel, Head Cross Country Coach, and her Assistant Coach Lee Rietsma both completed the Boston Marathon (26.2 miles) in April. Wachtel was one of eight duo teams that qualified for the marathon in which she pushed Katie, a disabled athlete, for Ainsley’s Angels of America, finishing in 4:20:00. In March, Wachtel won first place in the women’s division of the Sarasota Half Marathon with a time of 1:24:22. Rietsma finished his Boston Marathon solo run in 3:04:26. He also completed the Illinois Marathon with a time of 2:56:54, placing 38 th overall out of 1,140 runners and first in his age group out of 89 runners. Hay Outstanding Student-Athlete Ryan Russell Most Outstanding Player NJCAA DII Region 8 All-Region Team PHSC placed four position players on the NJCAA DII Region 8 All- Region Men’s Baseball Team: sophomore outfielders Ryan Russell (.384) and Caleb Walls (.385); and sophomore third basemen Zack Ghelfi (.263) and Brad Hession (.347). PHSC sophomore pitchers, Tyler Buchanan (7-2, 2.67) and Sam Prince (10-1, 4.08), with freshman Dan Nicholls (8-3, 4.63), also were named to the NJCAA DII Region 8 All-Region Team. *The Debra J. Hay Outstanding Student-Athlete Award is the highest honor given to one male and one female student-athlete who excels in the classroom, athletic field and community. FALL 2018 15
