14. MANAGING THE BURN: Firebreak preparations: All firebreaks consist of short mown turf paths, minimum of 20’ wide, which are green or bare dirt. Firing techniques and ignition pattern: We will begin ignition in the downwind side of the unit. Two crews will ignite in opposite directions (proceeding slowly to allow the backing fire to create a black line) until the crews meet at the opposite corner. This will allow the fire to flank together to burn out the interior portion of the unit. This is explained more fully below. Crew communication: Each crew leader and the burn boss will utilize Motola XTS 1500 radios for communication. Additional radios will be assigned to engine operators and ATV operators. In addition, the size of the burn units are such that visual contact should not be a problem. Fire behavior and weather monitoring: The burn boss will be responsible for monitoring weather and fire behavior. Weather measurements will be taken every half hour, beginning at the time of arrival on site. Weather measurements will then be taken immediately prior to ignition and every half hour for the duration of the burn. Holding: A pumper truck will be on site during the burn. The pumper truck will have immediate access to the fire line surround the burn unit. The possible exception would be the lower portion of the burn unit if this area is too wet. Metro Parks and Recreation will be operating a gator vehicle with a smaller water tank that will be able to travel the entire fire line surrounding the burn units. Fire sensitive areas: There are not structures within the unit that require protection. However, there are two residences to the south of the unit along Scott’s Gap Road. These residences are well outside of the control line. One of the residences is located within the secondary control line formed by the perennial drainage south of the unit. PRP Fire Department will have full access to the areas from Scott’s Gap Road. Contingencies (include safety zones, escape routes, secondary control lines,): Spotting: Ignition will stop in case of spotting. Holding crew leader will coordinate crew in controlling spots. If crew cannot contain spot, burn boss will direct additional crew members and/or 163
