Herbicide applications are most effective to prevent
sprouting; apply either glyphosate or triclopyr mixed
with water and 0.5% non-ionic surfactant.
Can pull seedlings from moist soil
Cut young plants to the ground, repeating as
necessary to control regrowth from sprouts
Basal bark herbicide treatment requires the
application of Garlon® 4 with a 15-20% mix in
horticultural oil
Cut stump applications require Garlon® 3A as a
50% mix in water
Cut stump treatments with trichlopyr or glyphosate
solution at 25 to 50% solution
Saplings can be treated with 20% Garlon® 4 in a
basal oil as a basal bark treatment. Older trees can
be girdled and then treated with this treatment.
Seedlings can be treated with a 2% solution of
glyphosate or triclopyr

Can pull seedlings from moist soil
Cut young plants to the ground, but will need
herbicide treatment to prevent future sprouting
Can also use girdling to kill larger trees when
herbicides are impractical
Herbicide application of 2% solution of glyphosate
or triclopyr, water and a 0.5% non-ionic surfactant
to thoroughly wet leaves is effective on seedlings
and small trees
Can also apply herbicides to freshly cut stumps to
reduce impact on nearby plants; apply 50% solution
of glyphosate or triclopyr plus water ensuring that to
cover at least 20% of outer stump.
Can pull seedlings from moist soil
Can be cut at ground level with power or manual
saw; can also be girdled with a hatchet to kill top of
the tree
Herbicide application is effective when using 2%
solution of glyphosate or triclopyr, water, and 0.5%
non-ionic surfactant until leaves are thoroughly wet
