Peaster Diner – Expect the Unexpected
T
raveling north on FM 920, five miles north of
Weatherford in the tiny hamlet of Peaster you will find
the Peaster Diner.
Nestled in a quaint, small white edifice with stone
wainscoting, the eatery sports a sign promising “small
town home cookin” flanked by two Texas stars — you
have my attention.
I parked my truck in front of the restaurant and
approached the entry door with a Texas star pattern in the
glass and entered into a comfortable 14-table café with
polished concrete floors, wood walls and smiling faces
all around. As I was seated, I ordered sweet iced tea (the
national drink of Texas) to drink while I looked over the
double-sided menu.
On one side the offerings consisted of all breakfast
fare such as pancakes, biscuits, huevos rancheros and
migas. On the opposite side items were more varied and
included everything from burgers and sandwiches, to
salads and steaks, plus a kids’ menu.
Rather than go for one of the menu items, I chose
to try one of the numerous daily specials written on the
marker board.
I ordered the street taco special and I was soon greeted by a bowl of freshly made salsa and chips to snack on
while my tacos were made.
The salsa had a fresh handmade taste with an excellent combination of flavors, and happily, not too much
cilantro.
I was enjoying the fresh chips and extremely good
salsa when my plate of street tacos arrived.
Arranged on the plate were three beef tacos on corn
tortillas. Each comes with a fresh slice of lime, rice and
beans and a side of green salsa. I was impressed by
the fact that the corn tortillas did not rip or tear when

I picked them up to eat. Something I noticed was the
welcome, sparse use of cheese. Cheese can cover a
multitude of culinary sins, but it is used sparingly here to
allow you to actually taste the food and not just cheese, a
real treat.
