Davis Dawson, an 11th grader at Jay M. Robinson High School, and Samuel Park, a 7th grader at Harris Road Middle School, will each receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in early May. There, they will join the top two honorees from each state and the District of Columbia for four days of national recognition events. During those events, 10 students will be named America’s top youth volunteers for 2015. Davis raised more than $35,000 and led the efforts of more than 200 volunteers to build a new house for a single mother and her four children through Habitat for Humanity. Samuel operates a video transfer service to raise funds for orphans in Kenya and Uganda and delivers e-book ‘libraries’ to orphanages, schools and youth centers in those countries. “We are extremely proud of Davis and Samuel and congratulate them on receiving this great honor,” said Barry Shepherd, superintendent of Cabarrus County Schools. “We know they will represent Cabarrus County School and North Carolina well.” The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. This is the program’s 20th anniversary. This program represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service.
