JMRHS to Host Robotics State Championship On Saturday, March 7th, Jay M. Robinson High School will once again host the North Carolina VEX Robotics State Championship. Approximately 30 high school and middle school robotics teams from across the state will converge on the Bulldog campus seeking not only the coveted title of State Champions, but they also will be competing for one of five qualification spots for the VEX World Championships, which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky, in April. Qualification rounds will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. and run until 11:30 a.m. After a short break, the competition will begin again at 12:15 p.m. and continue until 2:15 p.m. Final Elimination Rounds will start at 2:30 p.m. The Awards Presentation will follow. Come watch this exciting, competitive platform that tests the critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and teamwork skills of North Carolina’s future engineers. This event is being sponsored by EMC Corporation. CCHS Students Celebrate Hour of Code Superintendent Barry Shepherd announced that Elizabeth Snyder has been named the new principal of Hickory Ridge Middle School. Her appointment was approved by the Board of Education at its Feb. 9th meeting. She replaces Jim Carroll, who resigned in December. Snyder comes to Cabarrus County Schools from Thomasville City Schools, where she is currently an elementary school principal. She is an experienced educator who has worked as both a teacher and an administrator. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a master’s degree from Gardner-Webb University. She currently is enrolled in an educational leadership doctoral program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Snyder is expected to join the Hickory Ridge Middle team in mid-March. 4 •March/April 2015 • Parent Teacher Magazine  CCS Receives Million Dollar Grant Cabarrus County Schools recently received a $1.3 million After-School Quality Improvement Grant from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the N.C. General Assembly for STEM afterschool programs. The funds will be used to create STEM afterschool programs at W.M. Irvin Elementary, Rocky River Elementary, C.C. Griffin Middle and Concord Middle Schools. CCS will partner with Camp Invention, a nationally recognized program focused on creativity, innovation, real-world problem solving and the spirit of invention, to implement and deliver the programs. The programs will begin in April. New CCS Annual Report Now Available Students at Central Cabarrus High School celebrated the Hour of Code by completing some coding activities with its students. The Hour of Code was launched in 2013 with 53 million students worldwide participating throughout the year. President Barack Obama joined in this year’s celebration by writing his very first line of JavaScript code on Dec. 8th, showing that anyone can try computer science and that learning the basics is the best way to prepare for any career because these basic skills are relevant to any career in the 21st century.
