CNP Director Named to State Commission
Frank Fiorella, director of the CCS Child Nutrition
Program, has been named to the North Carolina
Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.
The Commission encourages community service
and volunteerism as a means of problem solving
across the state and provides valuable support for
the state’s growing force of volunteers who impact
the lives of others and help meet critical community
needs. Through its work, the Commission strives
to enhance the quality of life for North Carolinians through volunteer and
community service.
The Commission administers two federal programs in North Carolina:
AmeriCorps State and Citizen Corps and the Governor’s Volunteer Service
Award Program. The Commission also is a collaborative partner in the N.C.
Mentoring Partnership.
Fiorella joined Cabarrus County Schools in July 2012. Prior to that, he
worked in Montgomery County Schools as child nutrition director. He also
worked as a supervisor for Denver Public Schools (Colorado) and Milpitas
and Oakland Unified School Districts (California), as well as Paterson
Public Schools (New Jersey). He has a bachelor’s degree in Food Service
Management from Johnson & Wales University and is a certified school
nutrition specialist (SNS) and a member of the School Nutrition Association.
We congratulate him on his appointment.

Congratulations to Carl A. Furr Elementary School – winners of the Carolina
Panthers and the Allen Tate Company Panthers Spirit Rock Art contest!
The spirit rock was painted after Kathy Braswell, Furr Elementary art
teacher, brainstormed ideas with students in the Art Club and several other
classes. The final design featured the Charlotte skyline painted above a panther
face. The school’s art department will receive a $1,000 grant for its first place
win.
This is the fifth year for the spirit rock contest. Entries were judged by a
community panel. The winning designs were featured on the PantherVision
screen at Panthers Stadium in December, as well as in Roar Magazine and a
slideshow on the Panthers website.
Other schools that received grants were:
1st Runners Up -- $500 grants – Piedmont High School, Rea View
Elementary School, South Mecklenburg High School & Union Academy
2nd Runners Up -- $400 grants – East Gaston Middle School, Landsdowne
Elementary School, Northeast Middle School & York Comprehensive High
