CCS Announces Teacher Assistant of the Year
Congratulations to
Judy York, Teacher
Assistant at Rocky River
Elementary School,
who has been named
the Cabarrus County
Schools 2017-2018
Teacher Assistant of the
Year!
Superintendent Chris
Lowder and Assistant
Superintendent Glenda
Jones surprised York
with the announcement
on November 29th at
the school.
York has served as
a teacher assistant
in Cabarrus County
Schools since 1980. York began as a teacher assistant at Bethel
Elementary and transferred to Rocky River Elementary in 1997.
During her first year at Rocky River Elementary she was selected as
the school’s Teacher Assistant of the Year. In her current role, York
serves on the School Improvement Team and serves as the treasurer
of the Cabarrus County Association of Teacher Assistants. York has
been an active member of the North Carolina Association of Teacher
Assistants since 2009. According to York, “it takes a village to make a
school work” and she truly values working with all staff and making a
positive difference at her school.
ECHS Students Give Back
Cabarrus-Kannapolis Early College students worked with local
businesses to gather essential items for those in need. Special
thanks to Food Lion, Publix, Harris Teeter, Project Bridges, and
Panera Bread. More than 200 bags were filled and donated to The
Dream Center, a non-profit organization that supports Charlotte’s
homeless populations. Dream Center volunteers and ECHS stu-
dents distributed the bags earlier this month.
BOE Selects Candidate to Fill Vacancy
At its business meeting
on Monday, December
11, 2017, the Cabarrus
County Board of Education
selected Dr. Robert Kirk to
complete the remainder of
Tim Furr’s unexpired term.
Dr. Kirk is currently
executive director of the
West Cabarrus YMCA and
is a former CCS educator
and administrator.
Board members received
letters of interest
and resumes from 21
individuals looking to
fill Furr’s vacated seat.
From those 21, board
members selected four
finalists: Laura Blackwell, Holly Grimsley, Dr. Jeff Phillips and Dr.
Kirk. After opening statements and two rounds of questions at
Monday night’s meeting, Dr. Kirk was selected.
He will be sworn in as the BOE’s newest member at its first
meeting in January 2018.
