CCS Announces Teacher Assistant of the Year Congratulations to Judy York, Teacher Assistant at Rocky River Elementary School, who has been named the Cabarrus County Schools 2017-2018 Teacher Assistant of the Year! Superintendent Chris Lowder and Assistant Superintendent Glenda Jones surprised York with the announcement on November 29th at the school. York has served as a teacher assistant in Cabarrus County Schools since 1980. York began as a teacher assistant at Bethel Elementary and transferred to Rocky River Elementary in 1997. During her first year at Rocky River Elementary she was selected as the school’s Teacher Assistant of the Year. In her current role, York serves on the School Improvement Team and serves as the treasurer of the Cabarrus County Association of Teacher Assistants. York has been an active member of the North Carolina Association of Teacher Assistants since 2009. According to York, “it takes a village to make a school work” and she truly values working with all staff and making a positive difference at her school. ECHS Students Give Back Cabarrus-Kannapolis Early College students worked with local businesses to gather essential items for those in need. Special thanks to Food Lion, Publix, Harris Teeter, Project Bridges, and Panera Bread. More than 200 bags were filled and donated to The Dream Center, a non-profit organization that supports Charlotte’s homeless populations. Dream Center volunteers and ECHS stu- dents distributed the bags earlier this month. BOE Selects Candidate to Fill Vacancy At its business meeting on Monday, December 11, 2017, the Cabarrus County Board of Education selected Dr. Robert Kirk to complete the remainder of Tim Furr’s unexpired term. Dr. Kirk is currently executive director of the West Cabarrus YMCA and is a former CCS educator and administrator. Board members received letters of interest and resumes from 21 individuals looking to fill Furr’s vacated seat. From those 21, board members selected four finalists: Laura Blackwell, Holly Grimsley, Dr. Jeff Phillips and Dr. Kirk. After opening statements and two rounds of questions at Monday night’s meeting, Dr. Kirk was selected. He will be sworn in as the BOE’s newest member at its first meeting in January 2018.
