• Understand and / or seek clarification regarding the requirements for the course and the course assignments including when it is appropriate to use other sources and technology including translators , dictionaries and artificial intelligence ;
• Know the different forms of cheating and plagiarism and how to avoid them ;
• Cite sources appropriately and correctly ;
• Understand that there will be consequences for being caught in the act of cheating or plagiarizing ; and
• Abide by in-class and out-of-class assessment expectations including the following :
• Accessing only materials or equipment permitted and placing out-of-sight those that are unnecessary or restricted ;
• Restricting the need for movement ; and
• Ensuring others are restricted from viewing or copying their responses .
Parents / guardians will :
• Understand the different forms of academic dishonesty including how , through actions of making their learning available to peers , students may contribute to the dishonesty of their peers ;
• Support the process that investigates and concludes upon allegations of academic dishonesty ; and
• Understand there will be consequences for students who are academically dishonest .
When a Case of Academic Dishonesty Arises
Benefit of doubt will always be accorded to a student . However , when it has been determined that cheating , colluding or plagiarizing has occurred , a number of consequences will follow . The consequences will vary depending on the nature of the incident . In general , repeat offences and offences committed by senior students ( e . g . as the expectation to “ know better ” increases ) are treated more severely .
Investigation and Documentation
1 . The following illustrates a typical path of investigation that follows an incident of academic dishonesty : The teacher will inform the student of his / her concerns and provide the student with the opportunity to respond to these concerns . Note : The student must have an opportunity to address the concern prior to any conclusion or decision related to consequences .
2 . The teacher will inform and consult with his / her department head and , should it be determined that sanctions are appropriate , both will consult with an administrator to determine the appropriate course of action .
3 . With sufficient grounds for concluding academic dishonesty , the teacher and administrator ( usually the Director , Senior School ) will meet together with the student and , when a repeated or significant event , her parents / guardians / guardians to review the evidence , the student ’ s understanding of the situation , and , if applicable , explore mitigating circumstances .
4 . Following the investigation , sanctions for dishonesty will follow in one or both realms - academic and disciplinary :
• Academic consequences * may include one or more of the following sanctions ( list is not exhaustive ):
• The student ’ s parents / guardians may be contacted ;
• The student may be offered an opportunity to redo a similar assessment , in whole or in part ;
• The recorded grade of the assessment may be reduced according to the portion that was compromised ;
• The student may miss the opportunity to receive feedback on compromised assessment ;
• According to the statement on the release of disciplinary records outlined below , a letter of reference or recommendation may be required to
