The House System

The Senior School House system was first introduced in 1937 by Headmistress Sara Macdonald . The Senior School was divided into four Houses : Douglas , Gordon , Stuart and Wallace , after the four Scottish clans of the same names . The House system thrived as a vehicle for organized sports , drama , debate , music and a variety of other school activities . In the early ‘ 60s , during Miss Bedford-Jones ’ tenure as headmistress , two more Houses were added : Fraser and McDougall .
The current House system maintains the traditions established more than 80 years ago with the six Houses led by a House Captain who is selected by her peers through our student leadership elections in April . The House Captain leads her House and oversees her House Council , which is made up of representatives from each grade within her House ; together , they plan events and activities to build House spirit . Throughout the year , there are competitions between all six Houses where points are awarded . The House Cup is presented in June to the winning House .
Each new student to the Senior School is placed in a House . The placement is done randomly unless the incoming student has a sister already in the School or family ties to a House ( e . g ., mother , grandmother ), in which case the new student is placed in that House whenever possible .
