Student Assessment & Reporting
Effective , ongoing communication with parents / guardians regarding student progress is an important focus in the Junior School . When parents / guardians feel informed about their daughter ’ s growth , we are able to establish shared goals for her continued success . As per Ministry of Education guidelines , the Junior School communicates progress reporting 5 times per academic year in the following manner :
Progress Reports
Three formal progress reports are issued each year : one in December , one in March and one in June . This report documents a students ’ proficiency level on the 4-point proficiency scale , and provides descriptive feedback which comments on the student ’ s learning in relation to curricular standards set by the Provincial Curriculum .
Conferencing
Conferencing offers an opportunity for in-depth conversations to happen between the school , family and the student . Conferences between teachers and parents / guardians are arranged formally in October . Student-led conferences are held in March .
Student progress is assessed and evaluated by teachers using a variety of methods , including :
• Classroom observation and daily assignments
• Samples of student work on our electronic learning portfolio ( Seesaw )
• A variety of assessment tools , both formative and summative
• Projects and oral presentations
• Student self-assessments
Progress is reported in a variety of ways . Parents / guardians are encouraged to access their daughter ’ s electronic learning portfolio ( Seesaw ) as a window into her day-to-day schoolwork and progress . In Grades 6-7 , students will also make use of Google Classroom as a tool to complete classroom activities , assignments and demonstrate their learning . Seesaw and Google Classroom are both useful tools when engaging with students in ongoing conversations about their learning . Work shared on these platforms show the process and progress students make throughout the term across subjects and curricular competencies .
In addition to the organized reporting sessions , informal discussion about your daughter ’ s growth continues to be highly relevant and an important avenue for communication . Informal reporting , in the form of dialogue between teachers and parents / guardians , is an effective way to support a student ’ s progress and continued success . Informal discussion may include telephone calls , emails , notes in agenda books , letters , classroom visits and personally arranged meetings with the teacher .
