Dismissal to Parents / Guardians from Kent Field
In the event the School facilities are unsafe , such as in an earthquake , the School will evacuate to and dismiss from Kent Field . The School has a well-developed strategy for ensuring students get home safely :
1 . If communication permits , parents / guardians will receive notification of the situation on campus in the usual manner ( e . g ., text , voicemail , email ).
2 . Student well-being will be a priority . Students will be supervised at all times until a parent / guardian or emergency pick-up arrives .
3 . First aid needs will be addressed at a designated first aid station .
4 . To effectively manage the needs of students and employees , the School will control the number of parents / guardians on campus . Access to campus must be made through either Gate A , at the intersection of Balaclava Street and West 43rd Avenue or Gate M near the intersection of Blenheim Street and West 42nd Avenue .
5 . A member of staff will meet parents / guardians at each respective gate and oversee student sign-out and dismissal .
How Parents / Guardians Can Assist in an Emergency
Parents / guardians who become aware there is an emergency at the School can assist in the management of the emergency in three key ways :
• Add several emergency contacts to the student profile . Should a parent / guardian be unavailable or unable to respond to an emergency , having several other trusted individuals already assigned ensures an efficient response .
• Resist calling the School and your daughter directly . Tying up the phone lines and cell reception hinders emergency response from managing the scene effectively .
• Resist the urge to come to the School until it is appropriate . Emergency response can be impacted by increased traffic in the area of the school and / or an increased number of individuals to manage .
• Wait for instructions from the School . The School has the ability to communicate quickly and frequently with parents / guardians by phone , email and text .
School Security
Crofton House School maintains the security of students , staff , parents / guardians and visitors to campus . The School balances the conflicting desire for an open and welcoming campus with protective walls , secure gates , locked doors and security cameras .
KEEPING GATES CLOSED
Pedestrian gates are equipped with mechanisms to keep the gates closed . Keeping gates closed is a deterrent to individuals with no school-based purpose on campus . The gates are unlocked according to campus hours .
LOCKED DOORS
Some exterior doors remain locked throughout the day as required by the age of students and exposure to the street . For example , the Early Childhood Education Centre ( ECE ) front doors and the Junior School main entrance are always locked during the school day . Parents / guardians and visitors should expect to ring the doorbell to gain access to the appropriate office . Some exterior doors provide an emergency exit and are not used for routine entrance . These doors include :
• The science building door to West 41st Avenue ( Gate F )
• Senior School stair 3 exit door to West 41st Avenue ( Gate H )
• Except during special events , the vehicle entrance to the parkade
