Attendance Expectations & Responsibilities

Expectations
Crofton House School is committed to working with parents / guardians and students to ensure regular attendance . There is an expectation that students will attend classes and participate fully in the life of the School and throughout the entire school year . By being present in class , students have the best opportunity to make the most of the educational opportunities afforded by Crofton House School and to develop the important teacher-student relationships that are foundational to the School ’ s education program . Irregular attendance may lead to underachievement and a lack of participation in school life .
Our holiday and vacation schedule is generous with extended breaks twice during the school year ( December / January and March ). The School asks parents / guardians to restrict family vacation plans to the established holidays . Extended absences during the school year may undermine a student ’ s academic progress and her ability to commit to co-curricular programs . Further , beginning the summer vacation early impacts a students ability to consolidate learning and , in the Senior School , complete year-end summative assessments . Students who are absent for year-end summative assessments will complete these assessments at the end of August .
It is understood that students will miss class time for various reasons . As much as possible , appointments should be booked outside of school hours . However , medical appointments and illness may result in missed classes . In addition , students who participate in co-curricular events may miss classes to fulfill their commitments . The School believes that proper communication can support student success through an absence . The responsibilities of the student , parent / guardian and School are listed below for the times when these situations arise .
Each school has attendance procedures that best reflect the age and stage of the student . Please review the school-specific attendance procedures in the Junior and Senior School sections of this handbook .
