Health & Safety Standards //  Lamplighters Yeshivah Parent Handbook We encourage parents to keep their child with a fever home until he or she is fever-free for 24 hours, as a fe- ver may cycle up and down over a 24-hour period. This allows your child to recover fully and return well-rest- ed and able to participate in all activities. We know that you will usually be the first to observe any signs of illness in your child. You are welcome to call us with any questions about whether your child is well enough to attend. Also, remember that if a child is too ill to participate in basic activities, including out- side play, the child is too ill to be at school. Please call the school and leave a message as soon as you know your child will be absent due to illness. NOTICE OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASE It is imperative that all communicable diseases be reported to the school immediately upon diagnosis. When we learn that a child has a communicable dis- ease, we will notify the parents of the type of disease and when their child may have been exposed. To protect the child’s privacy, and in accordance with state and federal regulations, the name of the child who is ill is not men- tioned in this notice. Any child or staff member may not return without medical authorization or until the signs and symptoms of the disease are no longer present. Be- low is a list of some communicable diseases and the in- dications/requirements for return to school. • Chickenpox - All lesions are dry and crusted. • Impetigo (Blisters that are covered with honey-col- ored crusts) - Child will be readmitted at least 24 hours after the start of medication. If there is no improvement after 48 hours, the child should be reassessed by a physician. • Conjunctivitis (Commonly known as “pink eye.” Defined as a redness of the eye withburning and thick purulent discharge) - Child will be readmit- ted at least 24 hours after the start of medication and/or drainage present. • Lice and Scabies - Following medical treatment. • Pin worms - No restrictions following start of treat- ment. • Hepatitis - Physician’s statement required for re-admittance. • Strep Throat - No sooner than 24 hours after the start of oral medication. • Giardia - Following medical treatment. Further information regarding common child-related communicable diseases can be found on the following website: http://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/commu- nicable/ ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION Administering medication to children by program staff requires that you provide, in writing, approval and in- structions for administering the medication. Should your child need to take medication during the day, we ask that you adhere to the following procedures: • Submit the permission form as noted above for ad- ministration of medication. • All medications, including over the counter ones, are to be sent to school in their original container and given to the office with your child’s name, time directions and dosage indicated clearly. • General permission to take Tylenol or Ibuprofen can be given on the Emergency Form submitted at the beginning of the school year. ALLERGY ACTION PLAN All parents of students with allergies must fill out an Individual Risk Assessment Form (IRAP) and submit it to the office prior to school. In addition to submitting a labeled Epi-pen to the office, parents may supply an extra one for the classroom and students may carry one if they choose. HEALTH RECORD Every child attending Lamplighters Yeshivah must have a completed medical form on file. This form is is- sued by the State of New York and contains three parts: 29
