Common Illnesses
Common Illnesses
Athlete’ s Foot A contagious fungal infection causing itchy rashes, often spread in damp places. Prevent by keeping feet clean and dry, wearing moisture-wicking socks and using OTC antifungal sprays or powders.
Bacterial Infections Infections like strep throat require antibiotics and may be contagious for 24 hours after starting treatment. Athletes should avoid practice to prevent spreading it.
What to know about illness
Lice Parasitic insects spread through direct contact or shared items like brushes or hats. Symptoms include an itchy scalp and sores. Treatment requires thorough nit removal. A doctor’ s note confirming the athlete is lice-free is recommended before returning.
Mono A viral infection spread through saliva, with symptoms like fatigue, sore throat and fever. It can cause an enlarged spleen, risking rupture. Athletes must be cleared by a doctor before resuming practice.
Viral Infections Viruses like the common cold aren’ t treated with antibiotics. Athletes should rest and avoid contact until fever-free, as fever often signals contagion.
Prevention
You obviously can’ t guarantee your athlete will not contract one of these, or other illnesses, yet you can take some preventative measures.
• Make sure your gym does not allow knowingly contagious athletes in the facility.
• Pack your athlete’ s bag with tissues and hand sanitizer and encourage the use the sanitizer before eating.
• Educate your athlete not to share hair brushes / headbands / hair ties, clothing or towels.
• Educate your athlete not to share drinks with others even if they don’ t seem ill.
