These are some pieces of equipment that most paranormal researches will not leave home without. They are simple, easy to use, and come in very handy. Nowadays, you'll see a lot of new equipment: ghost boxes, shadow catchers, and all sorts of gadgets; however, this is the basics. This is what has been working for paranormal researchers for quite some time.

A Camera
The simple camera. Digital cameras are best because you wouldn't want to have a ghost show in your photo just to find out it's a double exposure or film developing issue. Also, digital cameras are just easier for uploading the pictures and being able to look at them quickly.
The camera does not have to cost a kidney either. A simple digital camera that you use to take family photos will do the trick.

A Video Camera
A video camera is a must. How else are you going to capture something floating by or sudden changes in the shadows? A video camera that is able to pick up sound is twice as nice because EVP's can also be recorded on video camera mics as well.
Eventually you will want to add night vision cameras to your equipment pile, but for now, a simple video camera used for home videos is perfect.
