From qualitative physics based on the senses to the mathematization of science
Da física qualitativa baseada nos sentidos à matematização da ciência
Summary This article seeks to explain the shift from the qualitative physics of Aristotle to the mathematical physics of Galileo, demonstrating the philosophical underpinnings of the changes. The method used for conducting this research consists of the following stages: definition of the object and design of the research model; identification, analysis and recording of information sources; codification of research note cards; and drafting of research results. The study concluded that the problems of science are problems posed by a philosophy; that all scientific theory is based on ontological and epistemological concepts related to Plato or Aristotle; and that science has shifted from Aristotelian sensorial knowledge to abstract mathematical knowledge. This article is a result of a research project called The epistemological affiliation of scientific theories, Code: SIP 20100181, funded by the Instituto Politécnico Nacional. México.

Resumo O artigo busca explicar como se deu o trânsito da física qualitativa de Aristóteles à física matemática de Galileu, mostrando o substrato filosófico das mudanças. O método empregado para realizar esta pesquisa desenvolveu as seguintes fases: delimitação do objeto e elaboração do esquema de pesquisa; determinação, análise e fichado de fontes de informação; codificação de fichas de trabalho; e redação dos resultados. Concluiu se que os problemas da ciência são problemas fundamentados em uma filosofia, que toda teoria científica está sustentada em concepções ontológicas e epistemológicas afiliadas a Platão ou a Aristóteles e que a ciência transitou do conhecimento sensorial aristotélico ao conhecimento matemático abstrato.
